Richard was serving in the Marine Reserves before he went into active duty and arrived in Vietnam 23 October 1967, where he was assigned to the 2nd Platoon of Mike Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division.
The battalion was participating in Operation Badger Tooth when they encountered hostile forces in the vicinity of Thon Tham Ke. Richard died as a result of a gunshot wound to the head from hostile small arms fire.
Survived by his parents, Wayne King and Grace R Bannister of 738 Shawnee, Erwin, Tennessee.
