James Jefferson Bateman was the 4th son and the 5th and last child of John Bateman and Rachael Churchill Bateman. He married Sarah Ann Barber Bateman, the 1st daughter and the 1st child of John Barber and Dicey Alford Barber, on Jun 29, 1856 in Rusk Co., TX. They had 5 sons and 3 daughters.
In 1859, Sarah's father, John, gave her fifty acres of land. Jim bought an additional fifty-two and a half acres from John Barber. In 1883 Jim and Sarah decided to move to Van Zandt Co. They purchased three hundred acres of land near the Highland and Index communities. Index is now Willow Springs. All the children except the last two were born in Van Zandt Co.
James Jefferson Bateman was my paternal great-great-grandfather.
