My Mother said he was called Uncle Dick. The Montgomery Co Marriage Record
says G.M.Ball mar Lou Smock, 6 May 1869. It definately should be Z M Ball(MCH)
Evidently he was at some time in the armed forces because he died in an army hospital.I have no record of service,but agewise I would say it was during the
Civil War.

Zephaniah Ball was buried in Hampton Virginia, near where he died in a Veterans Hospital. He was one of several white officers appointed to black regiments of the United States Colored Troops (USCT) during the Civil War.
