"Jack" was one of a kind. His integrity enabled him to speak up when things were not fair or right. He respected every individual and encouraged others to do the same. He went the extra mile for everyone. His character, sense of humor, colorful sayings and many stories will be missed. His knack of just showing up was delightful. None knew that better than his relatives in Virginia; whether he arrived to help with sandbags, to fish or to just "chew the fat."
Jack enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1946. He served in the United States Air Force, retiring after 28 years of service. He completed Officer Candidate School (OCS), Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT), flew KC97s and KC135s as a pilot, aircraft commander and instructor pilot, achieving command pilot rating. Jack loved to fly. His military tours took him worldwide, including Southeast Asia where he provided both air and ground support.
Jack attended The College of William & Mary where he met Joyce Fentress. They married in 1950 and remained married until her death in 1972. They had five children.
In Colorado he met and married Victoria O'Donnell in 1973. They had three children. After retiring, they moved to Tucson for a short time before settling in Sacramento, CA. Jack enjoyed raising children.
Jack loved to play golf, enjoyed 1964-1966 vintage Ford Mustangs, and to play cards.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; siblings, Jean Cheney and Edwin Broun "E.B." Garland and his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Victoria; eight children, BeLynn (Brian) Bowen of Kosovo, John (Mary Kay) Garland of San Antonio, TX, Frank (Carolyn) Garland of Sacramento, CA, Brenda (Andy) Weiner of West Lafayette, IN, Christina (Tim) Birch of Tucson, AZ, David Garland of Sacramento, CA, Andrea (Oscar) Garland-Diaz of Sacramento, CA, Jason (Wei-Jean) of Sacramento, CA; 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Jack was interred with full military honors at Lakeside Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Folsom, California on October 20, 2015.
