Dee was born June 11, 1959 and grew up in south St. Joe, graduating from Central High School in 1977. At the age of seventeen, she went to work for St. Joe State hospital as a psychiatric aide, and stayed twelve years. She then moved to Atchison and while raising her son as a single parent, graduated from the licensed practical nursing program at Northeast Kansas Technical College. She then went to work as a Charge Nurse at Medicalodges Atchison, staying eleven years until illness forced her retirement in 2001.
On April 6th, 2002, Dee married David Gatewood and they shared thirteen happy years. He survives of the home.
Dee loved flowers and spent many happy hours working in her flower gardens at her home. She passed her love of fishing onto her son. Although she loved her job, she was known to occasionally experience an unexplained illness when the fish were biting. She loved going to the casinos, garage sales and auctions and keeping in touch with her many friends and family. She was especially close to her sister Susie, and her day was not complete without calling her several times. Dee could wield a hammer, clean a mess of fish, skin small game and kill a snake, with her shoe if nothing else was handy.
In addition to her husband, Dee is survived by her son, Jeremy Ginn, and his fiancée, Jessica Myers of Kansas City, Missouri, three sisters, Joyce Rowland and her husband, “Mickey”, Delores “Loice” Jones, both of Kansas City, Missouri, and Ronna “Susie” Irvin, Omaha, Nebraska, a brother, Robert “Bobby” Jones, also of Kansas City, Missouri, and a sister-in-law, Janet Jones of St. Joe, Missouri.
She is preceded in death by her parents, brothers William “Bill” and Lee Charles Jones, a brother-in-law, Jesse Irvin Jr., a close friend, Joann Lawless, and her little dog and constant companion, “Bug”. She will be forever missed.
