TOLEDO, Ohio — Earl Leslie Kumpf, 93, passed away Wednesday in Toledo after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Brazil, Ind.

Mr. Kumpf graduated from Purdue University with a BSA degree. Earl served in World War II as a captain with the 44th Field Artillery Battalion, 44th Infantry Division. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Silver Star and the Purple Heart. In September of this year, Earl was excited to be a participant in the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.
Earl was the Agriculture Extension Agent of Daviess County for 24 years. Many advances were made in extension programs during his tenure. In 1962, he was President of the Indiana State Extension Agents. In addition to his professional duties, he devoted much time to other community activities including Christ United Methodist Church, Chamber of Commerce, United Fund, YMCA, CROP, Farm Bureau, Kiwanis and Elks. When not working, he loved tending to his beautiful flowers and growing his delicious fresh fruits and vegetables which he shared with neighbors and friends. He was an avid reader and loved to travel. He loved spending time with his family and always looked forward to family holiday gatherings. He was a faithful fan of the Purdue Boilermakers and Indianapolis Colts.
Earl is survived by Mary, his wife of 71 years; daughters Linda (Richard) Kesselring of Florida, Jacqueline (Randy) Kuntz of Toledo, Vicki (Robert) Hemmerlein of North Carolina, Jane (Ralph) Zychowicz of Toledo; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother Billy (Rosie) Kumpf and sister Mary Louise Riddell, all of Brazil. He is preceded in death by his parents Leslie and Irene Kumpf and brothers Glen, Max and John.
Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Hospice of Northwest Ohio, 30000 E. River Road, Perrysburg, Ohio 43551 or American Cancer Society, 5555 Frantz Road, Dublin, Ohio 43017. A memorial service will be scheduled in the spring in Brazil, Ind.
