After graduating from college, he moved to Northern California and worked as a residential counselor for at-risk youth at the Ettie Lee Homes for Youth. In 1998, he returned to Houston, Texas and worked for respected agencies such as the Houston Independent School District, H.L. Yoh Information Technology Associates and the Texas Education Foundation before moving on to Prairie View A&M University and was on the inaugural staff of Prairie View A&M's University College in 2000 as an academic advisor. While in this position, he was responsible for providing incoming freshman academic support in addition to helping them transition into higher education.
Four years later, he joined the university's athletic department as the University College Professional Advisor for Athletics and served as liaison between the athletic department and University College for all first-time, full-time Freshman athletes. In addition, he offered advising non-freshmen athletes with undecided majors.
In 2008, he accepted the position of academic enhancement coordinator at Prairie View A&M. In this position, he also provided student-athletes an academic support program designed to help them meeting the challenge of accommodating both athletic and academic standards.
At the time of his death, he was serving as Academic Advisor at Houston Community College. He is preceded in death by both parents: John Theodore Cochran and Eva Lou Cochran.
Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Adrienne R. Cochran; their children: Joshua Cochran, John Cochran and Gabrielle Cochran; sisters: Eva M. Smith (Rory), Lisa A. Porter (Fulton) and Connie L. Cochran; mother-in-law, Lois E. Pettis and father-in-law, Leon Pettis and many other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be at St. James Episcopal Church, 3129 Southmore, Houston, Texas on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at 10:00 O'clock in the morning. The funeral service will begin afterwards at 11:00 O'clock. Interment will follow at Houston Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Pearland, Texas.
