Dr. Douglas F. Bowman, 62, of Smethport, died Tuesday (November 25, 2008).

He was born Aug 23, 1946 in Chestertown, MD, a son of Franklin and Irene Mench Bowman. On August 14, 1971, in Lilly, PA, he married Barbara Klayko, who survives. He was a caring and loving husband and father.

Dr. Bowman was a 1964 graduate of Aberdeen High School, Aberdeen, Maryland and attended the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland, where he received his B.A. He received his B.S. from Washington College, Chestertown, Maryland, in 1976, and received his M.D. in 1978 from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Maryland. From 1979 to the present, he continued his medical education through AMA and AAFP.

Prior to being a physician, Dr. Douglas Bowman was a high school teacher at the Kent County High School in Chestertown, Maryland. From 1978 to 1981, he was Lieutenant of the U.S. Public Health Service Corps. In 1979, he came to Smethport, as part of the public health service corps, and practiced medicine in Smethport for the last 29 years, previously with the Bowman Health Center, presently with Misty Valley Health Center. He also served as School Physician for the Smethport Area School District from 1985 to 2003. Over the years, he held many medical positions, the majority affiliated with the Charles Cole Memorial Hospital.

He was a member of the McKean County Medical Society, Pennsylvania Medical Society, American Medical Association, American Academy of Family Practitioners, and the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians. He held past board member status in many local medical related organizations.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters: Rebecca (Scott) MacLeod of Greensboro, NC, Laura (Mark) Aimonetti of Anchorage, AL and one son: Adam Bowman of Chesilhurst, NJ

Visitation will be held on Friday, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at St. Gabriel's Roman Catholic Church, Port Allegany, PA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am Saturday in St. Gabriel's Roman Catholic Church, Port Allegany, with the Rev. John Murphy, pastor, as celebrant, and the Reverends Vincent P. Cieslewicz and Charles Schmitt, as concelebrants.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Gabriel's Roman Catholic Church, Port Allegany, S.W. Smith Library, Port Allegany, or the Hamlin Memorial Library, Smethport.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes, Inc., Smethport.
