Ruby Deal Byrd 91 of Hickory died Oct 2, 2002 at the Brian Center in Viewmont.

Born May 5, 1911 in Catawba County she was a daughter of the late Mernie and Hattie Hoke Deal.

A member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church for 56 years she was in Women of the Church Elizabeth Missionary Group Sunday school and the Trinitarians. A former member of Christ Lutheran Church she was an organist for 15 years and taught Sunday school. She attended Claremont Central High School now Hickory High School where she was a pianist for the school and Junior Moose Orchestras. A home maker she was a member of the Junior Womens Club and St Cecelia Music Club for 53 years where she was treasurer for two terms. She attended Lenoir Rhyne College.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Everett Byrd; two brothers Thomas Deal and Kenneth Deal and a sister Ruth Deal Oliver.

Survivors include a son and daughter in law Wayne and Miriam Byrd of Carrollton, Texas; two daughters and a son in law Nancy Boyd of North Myrtle Beach, SC and Jane and Steve Mull of Hickory; seven grandsons John Inman and Robert Inman of Hickory, Steve Byrd of Rockhill, SC. Wesley Byrd of Taylorsville, Chris Byrd of Dallas, Texas, Scott Gadd of Charlotte and Michael Gadd of Atlanta, Ga; four granddaughters Gail McComb of Hickory, Marian Cameron of Rockhill, SC, Suzanne Byrd of Raleigh and Maria Mills of Dallas, Texas; 17 great grandchildren and a number of nephews and nieces

The funeral will be conducted by the Rev Robert Shoffner and Deborah Michaels at 11 am Friday at her church. Burial will be in Catawba Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be her grandsons; John Inman, Robert Inman, Steve Byrd, Wesley Byrd, Scott Gadd and Michael Gadd.

The family will be at the church one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 547 Sixth St NW Hickory, NC 28601. Bass Smith Funeral Home 334 Second St NW Hickory is in charge of arrangements.
