He was born in Monroe Twp., Preble County, Ohio; the son of Martin and Sarah (Cosby) Shewman. He married Hannah M. Lee on January 6, 1873, Preble County, Ohio, with whom he shares a headstone. To this union, five known children were born: Rena, Pearl, Ethel, Russell L., and Clyde W. Shewman. Upon the death of Hannah in 1901, he married Sophia (Earhart) Kontz on May 5, 1904, Preble County, Ohio.
