DELMAR Leonard Pete Schaap, 84, died Friday, August 11, 2006 after a long illness. Born in Albany on April 20, 1922, Pete was the son of the late Leonard and Florence Schaap. He graduated from Albany High School and attended Ryder College before enlisting in the Army in 1942. Pete was a member of the Yankee Division, 104th Infantry Regiment, fighting in the Ardennes, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He was captured in the Battle of the Bulge in Wiltz, Luxenburg and was forced to march along with thousands of other captives from Nurenberg to Mooseberg, Germany. Responding to a request from his granddaughter for an ethical will, Pete wrote that being honest was always the best choice. Pete Schaap was truly an honest man which was recognized by all who knew him. Peter retired from the Ford Motor Company after 31 years. He was instrumental in the founding of the Bethlehem Community Church in Delmar. He belonged to the Northeast Chapter of American Ex-Prisoners of War, the American Legion and the Guilderland Elks Club. Pete is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Robin Auty Schaap; his daughter, Robin Geery of Voorheesville; his son, Peter Schaap and his wife Anna of Cary, N.C.; and his grandchildren, Emily Beth Geery, Julia Brandon and her husband Eamon, both of Albuquerque, N.M., Joshua Schaap of Charleston, S.C. and Sonia Schaap of Raleigh, N.C. Other survivors include his sister, Florence Buddenhagen of Nashua, N.H.; and his sister-in-law, Edyth Auty Guyer of Delmar; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar. Friends may call Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
