Operation STARLITE began in the early morning hours of August 18 with Company E landing by helicopter under enemy fire in the vicinity of Nam Yen (1) with a search and destroy mission towards the north and west in the Binh Son District of Quang Ngai Province.
Approaching the hamlet the Marines began receiving heavy fire from an entrenched enemy force; supporting arms and reinforcement were called in as the battle to clear the enemy from their defensive positions continued throughout the day. By the end of the day when the fire fights subsided, the Marines had cleared the enemy consolidating their positions and their casualties were evacuated. The Company had suffered many losses during the battle.
LCpl was one of the casualties, wounded by hostile rifle fire he was evacuated for medical treatment and transferred to the US Air Force Hospital a the Clark Air Force Base, Philippine Islands where he died on August 24 from the wound he has sustained.

JC was born in Fairfield and lived there most
of his life until he enlisted in the Marines
3 March 1964,at a Birmingham Recruiting
Office.
When JC arrived in Vietnam June 1965 and
was assigned to Echo Company,2nd Battalion,
4th Marine Regiment,3rd Marine Division.
Several companies from the 3rd Marines were
participating in Operation Starlight in the
vicinity of An Cuong(2),Namyen and Hill 30
when they were engaged by a large hostile
group.JC was wounded by small arms fire on
18 August and was med-evac.Due to the
severity of the gunshot wound to his left leg
,JC flown to the USAF Hospital for further
medical treatment,at the Clark Air Force Base
in the Philippines.JC died as a result of
embolism left lower lung pulmonary edema,as
a result of the gunshot wound.Two Corpsman
and fifty Marines died during the engagement.
Tour of duty unknown.
