Eloise was born April 29, 1933 in Dubuque, Iowa to the late Alois and Frances Kaufmann. She attended Clark College in Dubuque and worked as a dietitian for the U.S. Public Health Service in Staten Island, NY. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother, Paul Kaufmann; a sister, Rosemary Bardon; and a daughter, Ann Frances Smith.
Eloise is survived by her husband of 54 years, Lawrence D. Smith of the home; daughters, Judith Lynn Benedetto of Goldsboro, NC, Margaret Smith of Edgartown, MA., Laura Shields (Keith) of Arcadia, NC, and Rachel Williams (Doug) of Winston-Salem, NC; sons, Alan Smith of Winston-Salem, NC and Thomas Smith of Charlotte, NC; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 23, 2013 at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Friday at Salem Funeral Home, Main St. Chapel. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 335 Springdale Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27104.
