Requiem masses will be offered in Seattle, Los Angeles, and Yakima for the Most Rev. Joseph Patrick Dougherty, 65, who died Friday of a heart attack while on a fishing trip in the Westport area.

The body has been taken to St. Alphonsus Parish, Los Angeles, where Bishop Doughtery has been pastor since becoming an auxiliary bishop of Los Angeles a year ago.

Bishop Dougherty was born January 11, 1905, in Kansas City, Kan., but was only a few months old when his parents moved to Seattle's Georgetown section.

He studied at the University of Portland and St. Patrick's Seminary, Menlo Park, Calif.

After ordination on June 14, 1930, he served as a priest in the Diocese of Seattle, rising to the position of chancellor under Archbishop Connolly.

After 11 years as chancellor, he was consecrated as bishop of Yakima when that diocese was erected in 1951.

He had been the first bishop of Yakima until ill health caused his resignation. He was succeeded in that see by a cousin, the Most Rev. Cornelius Power.

The funeral mass in Los Angeles will be at 11 a. m. Tuesday. A requiem mass will be offered at 10:30 a. m. Monday in St. James Cathedral, Seattle. The mass will be concentrated by the Most Rev. Thomas A. Connolly, archbishop of Settle; the Most Rev. Tomas Gill, auxiliary bishop of Seattle, and Bishop Power.

The body will lie in state in St. Paul's Cathedral,
Yakima, Wednesday. A funeral mass will be offered there at 11 a. m. Thursday.

Bishop Dougherty will be buried in the priests' plot of Calvary Cemetery, Yakima.

Bishop Dougherty is survived by a sister, Kathleen Dougherty, of Seattle.
