Larry Joseph Jones, 57, of Severna Park, MD, died of complications of lung cancer and chronic lymphocytic leukemia at his home on Monday, September 22, 2008.

Born November 27, 1950, in Thomasville, NC, to Dorothy Brown and Joseph Oliver Jones, he spent his youth in Walnut Cove, NC.

He was a graduate of South Stokes High School (1969) and the University of North Carolina-Greensboro School of Business (1977); he began his business career in 1978 at Lever Brothers, Inc, where he attained the level of Sales Executive with Unilever, HPC. He retired in 2005 after 30 years of outstanding service and great fun.

Although a sales executive by profession, his true passions were music, fishing, Redskins football, NASCAR, and most importantly, enjoying his friends and family. He was gifted with many musical talents, most especially the bass guitar. He cut his first album at the age of 13 and continued to excel musically, hoping to renew his music career with his boyhood friends once his health improved.

His greatest pleasure was standing on the beach, fishing and laughing with his friends. His infectious laugh will be greatly missed.

Known as "L" by his friends and "Mr. Larry" in his Severna Park neighborhood, he was quick-witted, affable, and kind.

At the time of his death, his family, neighbors, friends, and beloved cats, Nicky and Smokey, waited at his bedside offering loving support.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Oliver Jones (Walnut Cove); his in-laws, Andrew Joseph and Mary Ayers Markey (Winston-Salem).

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Anne Markey Jones of the home; his mother, Dorothy Brown Jones of Walnut Cove; his sister-in-law, Carol Markey; his nieces: Emily and Molly Markey; his nephew, Andrew Markey; his adopted nephew, Donovan McBride; his extended family; and a multitude of friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 26, 2008, at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 335 Springdale Avenue. Inurnment will follow in the Church Columbarium.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth Miller Funeral Home, Silas Creek Parkway.

Larry was an active conservationist and strongly urged that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Piedmont Land Conservancy of North Carolina, P.O. Box 4025 Greensboro, NC 27404-4025.
