Dennis Bernard Clare was the son of Carl Bernard and Winifred Miriam Clare of Rock Ferry, Birkenhead. He was an Assistant Steward on the (Dutch) merchant ship Laertes when it was torpedoed and sunk off the coast of Florida, USA, on May 3, 1942. German submarine U-109 was responsible, and Mr. Clare was one of 18 men who died as a result. He was 17 years old.
