Milo Vernon Phipps, 86, of Winston-Salem passed away Saturday, May 26, 2007. He was born Feb. 3, 1921, to Terrance and Agnes May Phipps in Luverne, Minn. He spent most of his youth in Washington, Ind. He was president of the student council at Washington High School. Upon graduating from high school, Mr. Phipps enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served in the Pacific during World War II. After the war, he earned a degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Kansas. After earning his degree, Mr. Phipps moved to Indianapolis, Ind. In June of 1947 he married Helen Hughes Phipps. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus for over 30 years. He was vice president of design for B&H Tool and Die. In 1995, Milo and Helen moved to Winston-Salem to be with their daughter, Patricia Phipps McCormick, and her family. He was a member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. Mr. Phipps was preceded in death by his five siblings; and his parents. He is survived by his wife, Helen; daughter and son-in-law Patricia and Sam McCormick; granddaughter Kathleen Ann McCormick of Hoboken, N.J.; and granddaughter Courtney and her husband, Rusty Salton, of Charlotte. The family will receive friends and family from 7 to 8:30 Tuesday evening, May 29, at Hayworth Miller Silas Creek Chapel. A funeral Mass in celebration of his life will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 333 Springdale Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27104, with the Rev. Thomas Kessler officiating. A private inurnment will be held at a later date at St. Leo the Great Columbarium. The family wishes to express our appreciation to the staff at Forsyth Medical Center and in particular the Ninth Floor nursing staff. We also want to thank the staff at Springwood Care Center for their kindness. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Senior Services, Catholic Social Services or the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem where Mr. Phipps was a senior volunteer for many years.
