Constance received a bachelor's degree in 1958 from McNeese State College, Louisiana (English/phycology). She did her graduate work in psychology at Louisiana state University and Rutgers University.
Before being diagnosed with mutiple sclerosis, Connie was involved in establishing special education classes in four parishes in southern Louisiana. After moving to Winston-Salem in 1960 she focused her efforts on church and civic causes. She was a lifetime member of St. Leo's Catholic Church and the St. Theresa's Guild. She was also a member of the Monticello Club and the N.C. Paraplegic Association. Connie served as a Gray Lady for the American Red Cross. She was a devote wife and mother, and an animal lover who has a soft spot for all Chihuahuas.
Preceding her in death were her parents; a son, Philip John Toelkes; and daughter, Jane Katherine Toelkes.
Her husband, Edward Toelkes; sons David Toelkes and his wife, Jane, and Philip and his wife Cindy; a niece; two granddaughters; and her best friends, survive her.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas K. Kessler officiating. Hayworth Miller Silas Creek Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
