Parents were Dr. Elias Smith and Adaline Spore (aka Spoor).

Fred was employed with the Wabash Railroad. He married Clara Bell Skinner on November 13, 1903 at Whitmore Lake. She was the daughter of William E. Skinner and Ida May Ramer, born in Fowlerville, Livingston County, Michigan in 1886.

The couple had a daughter they named Gertrude, born July 27, 1905 in Howell. Fred would die of Typhoid Fever pneumonia less than 2 months later.

His widow remarried in August of 1906 to Carl A. Blank, who took the family to Kallispell, Montana. Clara Skinner Smith Blank died there in 1920, 49 days after registering her family on the US census of January 5th.

Fred and Clara's daughter Gertrude returned to Michigan after her mother's death.

The Smith plot also contains the graves of Mrs. Cora Stoughton (Fred's sister, Cora May) and her husband, Eldon J. Stoughton, who were married Dec. 9, 1903 at Whitmore Lake.

Between them are the graves of 3 of the children of Fred's daughter Gertrude, who married Orville Dobbs, July 22, 1922 in Detroit. She and Orville had 2 more surviving children and divorced after 1940. Gertrude died in 1955 and was buried under her maiden name in Howell's Lakeview cemetery.
