BARTONVILLE ~ Floyd Melvin Newby, 86, of 3901 Chalmers, passed away at 1:30 a.m. Saturday, July 1, 2006 at Morton Terrace Care Center in Morton.

Born September 14, 1919 in White County to William P. and Mina (Baity) Newby, he married Genelle Leathers on September 17, 1938 in Morganfield, Kentucky. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Ellen Kay Sanders of Bartonville; two daughter-in-laws, Sharon Newby-Bowers and Cindy Newby; ten grandchildren, Paul (Mary) Sanders, Jennifer Sanders, Derek Newby, Jamie (Bob) Loeb, Heather (Dennis) Graber, Jenny (Wade) Cox, Christy (Brian) McCarthy, Bryan Newby, Sean Newby, and Joel Newby; and six great-great-grandchildren, Kaeleb Newby, Isaac Newby, Caitlyn Newby, Sophie Graber, Eliza Graber, and Brianna Cox.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons (Gary M. Newby and Danny Lee Newby), five brothers, and two sisters.

A United States Navy veteran of World War II, he served from October 29, 1943 to December 10, 1945. He served in the Pacific on the USS Barnstable.

Floyd began working for R.G. Le Tourneau in Peoria and worked there for 33 years, retiring when it was known as WABCO as a shop clerk in 1984. Previously, he worked for 10 years at Hiram Walker and Sons in Peoria.

He was a member of Faith Missionary Church in rural Peoria and its Keenagers Group. He also was a member of American Legion Post #979 in Bartonville and WABCO Retirees Club.

Floyd enjoyed gardening. He also enjoyed playing the guitar and visited area nursing homes with his musical ministry.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 5, 2006 at Faith Missionary Church, 1825 South Airport Road, rural Peoria. The Rev. Craig L. Hislope will officiate. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Maple Ridge Cemetery in Mapleton, where military rites will be accorded.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel.
