PEKIN ~ Charles William Grossweiler, Jr., 86, of 1834 Highwood Avenue, passed away at 6:35 a.m. Saturday, July 8, 2006 at Pekin Manor. He wintered on Anna Marie Island in Florida.

Born October 12, 1919 in Pekin to Charles William and Martha (Schermer) Grossweiler, he married Ruth Irene Brueckner on May 31, 1941 at Grace United Methodist Church in Pekin. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Gary (Peggy) Grossweiler of Star Lake, Minnesota; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Kim Charles Grossweiler; one brother, Irvin "Spud" Grossweiler and one great-granddaughter.

A World War II Army Air Corps veteran, he was a B-26 Bomber Pilot with the 451st Squadron of the 322nd Bomber Group of the 9th Air Force. He was a member of the William Schaefer American Legion Post 44 in Pekin.

Chuck worked for Commonwealth Edison for 38 years as an operator at the Powerton Station, retiring in 1975. He was a member of the Powerton Playboys. He also was a past president and business manager of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 7361 and past president and chairman of the IBEW Systems Council.

An ardent fisherman, he was a charter member of In-Fisherman and a lifelong member of B.A.S.S. Chuck also enjoyed golfing, bowling and hunting. He was a former member of Pekin Country Club, where he had served a 3-year term on the Board of Governors. He also was a former member of Sunset Hills Country Club and the former Tazewell Club. He had served on the United Fund Board.

He was a 58-year member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 1271 and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 916, both in Pekin.

Chuck was a proud member of the 1937 Pekin Community High School Basketball team that won the Big 12 and finished 4th in the State Tournament.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Pekin.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 11, 2006 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Gary L. Ford will officiate. Visitation will be from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin, with Elks Rites provided by his lodge. Military Rites will also be accorded by the Tazewell Military Rites Team.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Children's Ministry of Grace United Methodist Church, 503 North 4th Street, Pekin, IL 61554.
