William Alphonse Spargo was born September 14, 1921 in Ewen, Michigan, to William Thomas Spargo and Emily Emma Forchette Spargo. He was the fourth in line of 10 children born to William and Emily. He attended school in Ewen, Michigan. On June 16, 1942, he began serving in the U. S. Army Air Corp. Most of his time was served in India. He received the good conduct medal, American Theatre Service medal and the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Service medal. He was honorably discharged on Febuary 7, 1946.
On August 12, 1943 he married Gladys Freida Schrader in Ontonagon, Michigan. Upon his arrival home from the Army Air Corp they made their home in Watersmeet, Michigan.
He worked in local lumber mills until he later secured full time employment with the United States Forest Service where he was still employed at the time of his death. During his 33 years of employment with the USFS he served in various departments and capacitys. He manned the 100 foot fire towers on the watch for forest fires, which were prevelant in those days because of the trains. He was also a law enforcement officer for our national campgrounds in the area. He received honors and recognition for his job performance and service to the public.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed scouting through old camps looking for old bottles etc. He always planted a huge garden and loved working in it.
He attended and was a member of the Watersmeet Baptist Church for many years. He served as a deacon and a trustee. He also did visitation with our pastor, visiting the sick, having Bible study and services at jails in nearby communities and also at Camp Gibbs, which was a retirement home for men--that camp no longer exists. He was very active in the church. In 1970, he and the rest of the family began attending the Land O' Lakes Bible Church where he was still attending at the time of his death.
His pride and joy were his grandchildren. Randy Scott Hall was his first grandchild born in 1967. Randy and his grandpa had a deep bond of love. Eva Marie Hall joined her brother Randy in 1970. In April of 1979, Michael Lee Spargo was my brother Roger's first child. Sadly, dad only lived for three months after Michael was born so he never had the chance to spend time getting to know him. Corrina Marie Spargo was not born until 1986, so she and grandpa never met. He also had a step-granddaughter Susan.
On July 6th my dad was hospitalized to undergo tests since he had not been feeling well for quite some time. Before they could determine his problem he died of a massive heart attack on July 8, 1979 at the Eagle River Memorial Hospital in Eagle River, Wi.
He was survived by his wife Gladys of 36 years, daughter Judith (Hayden) Spargo Hall, son Roger Lee (Ellen) Spargo, his grandchildren Randy, Eva, Michael, & Susan. He was further survived by his older brother John (Hulda) Spargo, older sister Angeline (Clifford) Brown, sister Ada, younger sisters Mary (Wilbert) Gravien, Rachel (Norman) Kasten and Rose (Kenneth) Robinson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother in 1958, father in 1965, an infant son Charles in 1947, two infant brothers and one infant sister, his mother-in-law in 1955, father-in-law in 1970 and a brother-in-law Val Augustine in 1966.
The Brown Funeral Home in Bruce Crossing, Michigan assisted the family during this time of sadness. Visitation for family and friends was the evening of July 10, 1979 at the Brown Funeral Home. Funeral services were held at the Land O' Lakes Bible Church in Land O' Lakes, Wi. at 2:00 p.m. on July 11, 1979, with the Rev. George Noll officiating. Burial was in the Watersmeet Cemetery at Watersmeet, Michigan, in the Spargo plot.
Dad is deeply missed and loved but we know he is with our heavenly father and no longer suffering.
