Civil War veteran, served in 4th Regiment, Missouri State Militia Cavalry.

John H. Brockman, son of Harriet F. (née Clement) and Willis Mason Brockman, was born in 1836 in Monroe County, Missouri, where the Brockman family had settled in 1828. The Brockman family moved in October 1843 to Holt County, Missouri, and Willis Brockman entered land in that county in 1849 and 1851.

In October 1861, John H. Brockman enrolled and mustered in Company F, Kimball's Regiment, Six Months Missouri Militia. Company F was organized at Oregon, Holt County. Also serving in Company F were his younger brother Henry Brockman and brother-in-law John Painter Ruhl.

Enlisting again on 4 April 1862 at St. Joseph, Missouri, he mustered in as a sergeant in Company F, 4th Regiment, Missouri State Militia Cavalry. According to his enlistment papers, he was 5 feet, 11 inches tall; a light complexion, dark eyes, and brown hair. The 4th Regiment fought in several battles, including: Second Battle of Springfield, Missouri (1863); Second Battle of Lexington, Missouri (1864); and Battle of Mine Creek, Kansas (1864). Sergeant John H. Brockman mustered out on 9 April 1865 at St. Louis, Missouri.

John H. Brockman and Miss Mary Ruhl, both of Holt County, were married on 18 February 1866 in Holt County. Justice of the peace Richard Acton, the groom's brother-in-law, performed the ceremony. (John's brother Henry had married Mary's sister Caroline on 24 December 1865 in that county.) John H. and Mary Brockman would have three children.

The Brockman family moved to Cloud County, Kansas, in 1871; then about 1877 moved to Pawnee County, Kansas; and in 1882 moved to Washington Territory, locating near Rockford, Spokane County. (Levi Ruhl, John H. Brockman's widowed father-in-law, traveled with the family.)

John H. Brockman's biography relates that: "He was engaged in farming and photography there [Rockford] until 1894, when he returned to Missouri, fitted up a photograph car and began traveling." He was back in Rockford in November 1897 and died there days later. His widow later settled in Spokane. Daughter Elma and son David graduated dental school; daughter Fannie became a photographer.

His bio. omits that he was admitted on 7 April 1896 to the U.S. National Home for Disabled Veteran Soldiers in Leavenworth, Kansas; transferred elsewhere on 1 August 1896; and discharged on 10 March 1897. He resided subsequently at Rockford.
