Walter M. Geist, 81, of Alexandria Township, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015 at the Hunterdon Care Center in Raritan Township.

Born Dec. 25, 1933 in Lincoln, Nebraska, he was the son of the late Walter and Dorothy Geist. He was a graduate of the Junction City High School in Kansas, and enjoyed living at nearby Ft. Riley.

He moved to Chicago in 1951, where he lived for over 40 years. He spent 36 years with both Western Electric and AT&T, where he was involved in the installation and management of telephone switching systems, retiring in 1989.

He spent many years enjoying the company of his dog, Katie.

He was an avid hiker and explored many of the local, state, and national parks. He also enjoyed reading, jazz and opera, and doing Sudoku and crossword puzzles.

Walter is survived by his wife of over 31 years, Nancy Swift. Survivors in addition to his wife include his son Walter Geist and his wife Peg of Pittsburgh; son David Geist and his wife Deb of Cary, Ill.; and son Richard Geist and his wife Bridget of Lufkin, Texas. Other survivors include his five grandchildren: Carrie King and Zachary Geist of Pittsburgh; Sarah Shaffer (Jacob) of Fairmont, West Virginia; and Jason and Natalie Geist of Cary, Ill.
