He was with Leendert Johannes Bal and Frans Hendrik Linkenhoff receiving swimming lessons from their mess leader, Dirk Herman van de Wetering, at Whitechapel Public Baths, Goulston Street, London when a V2 rocket hit the building and killed all four sailors.
