VIER-Henry J. Reverend Monsignor. Died from heart failure January 10, 2001 at the Osborn Home in Rye, New York. Msgr. Vier was born in White Plains, NY on September 1, 1913, the son of the late Dr. Henry and Mrs. Henry J. Vier. He graduated from Iona Preparatory School in 1931 and received a BA degree from Georgetown University in 1935. He was ordained on May 18, 1940 at St. Joseph's Seminary. Father Vier then served simultaneously at St. Helena, Bronx and Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Ardsley for a year and a half. In January 1942 he enrolled in the Catholic University School for Social Work and in August 1943 was awarded a Master of Social Work Degree. He, thereupon, was assigned to the Catholic charities of the Archdiocese. In 1943 while at the Church of the Incarnation in Manhattan, he was named Parochial Vicar. On September, 27, 1950 he was assigned to the Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Home in the Bronx as Assistant Chaplain. On September 7, 1954, he was named Director of the Catholic Guardian Society. In 1958 Pope Pius X11 appointed Father Vier a Papal Chamberlain. On January 31, 1959 he was assigned to Our Lady of Good Counsel in Manhattan and on September 3, 1960 was appointed Spiritual Director of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. On January 21, 1961 Msgr. Vier was named Director of the Mission of the Immaculate Virgin, Mount Loretto, Staten Island. In July, 1961 he was made a Domestic Prelate by Pope John XX111. Msgr. Vier's first pastorate after leaving Catholic Charities in 1969 was at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Mt. Kisco, NY. Four years later he was transferred to the pastorate of St. Raymond's in the Bronx in 1973. While Pastor, he named Chairman of the Inter-Parish Finance Committee of the Archdiocese. In 1976 he was appointed an Archdiocesan Consultor. On September 15, 1976 he was made Episcopal Vicar of the East Bronx. On November 4, 1982 he was reappointed Episcopal Vicar South East Bronx. Msgr. Vier was given special recognition as Benefactor of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools on October 1985. On April 20, 1986, in a ceremony at St. Patrick's Cathedral Cardinal O'Connor presented Msgr. Vier with the St. George Emblem in recognition of his contributions to Scouting. Msgr. Vier retired as Pastor of St. Raymond's in July 1988 and was named Pastor Emeritus. The Msgr. Henry J. Vier Family Life Center in the Bronx was dedicated by Cardinal O'Connor on September 22, 1997. He is survived by two brothers, John H. of Rye, NY and Thomas H. of Jupiter, FL, eleven nieces and nephews and twenty grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Alice Vier Levins of Greenwich, CT in 1957 and a niece, Marilyn J. Vier of Rye, NY in 1986. Reposing at Graham Funeral Home, 1036 Post Road, Rye, NY on Sunday 7-9pm and Monday 2-4pm. Mass of the Christian Burial at the Church of the Resurrection, Rye, NY, Tuesday 10:00am.
