Dorothy Davis Reaves, a retired music teacher and founder of the String and Orchestra Program in the Alachua County school system, died Friday at her Gainesville home. She was 93.
Mrs. Reaves was born in Omaha, Neb., and moved to Gainesville from Knoxville, Tenn., in 1947. She was retired from the Alachua County school system.
From 1948 to 1971, she served as violinist in the University Community Orchestra at the University of Florida. She established the String and Orchestra Program in 1955, and later founded the citywide Gainesville Youth Orchestra and the countywide annual "String Roundup."
She was active in many professional associations, including Gainesville Music Teachers Association, Florida Music Educators Association, American String Teachers Association and National Federation of Music Clubs. After she retired in 1970, a community scholarship endowment was set up in her name.
She received many honors, including Teacher of the Year at Gainesville High School, Distinguished Service Award from National Federation of Music Clubs and a Citation for Honorable and Distinguished Service from the Alachua County School Board. She was named Musician of the Year in 1982 by Foundation for the Promotion of Music and in 1986 became the first Floridian to achieve the State Unit Award from American String Teachers Association.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence William Reaves.
Survivors include daughters Carolyn Reaves of Gainesville, Martha Reaves Head of Atlanta and Florence Reaves of St. Louis; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
