Husband of Susan Emmaline Holland. He served in C.S.A., Gaines Invisililes, Pvt. 46th Miss. Inf. Co. A. organized late 1862, under Colonel John W. Balfour. Mathias was captured in the siege of Vicksburg. He took oath of allegiance not to take up arms against the United States and was paroled July 4, 1863. He walked back home to Wayne County, Miss to see his family then left going to Georgia to join the the fight again. Mathias was killed in action June 19, 1864 in the battle of Kennesaw Mountain. He was actually buried in a mass grave in the Marietta Confederate Cemetery, Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia, where he died close to the hospital. A C.S.A. Memorial marker was placed in the family cemetery in the West Shady Grove Cemetery, Wayne County, Miss. in his honor.
