Only child of James Semple and grandson of "English" Semple. Was in the War of the Rebellion; member of Company "A," 18th Regiment Connecticut volunteers; prisoner at Libby and Belle Isle. Killed while in discharge of his duties as mechanic in Chelsea Paper Mills, Greeneville, Conn. Married Margaret Coulter (born in Scotland) and had three children: Margaret Alexander, James Whithill, and William Coulter.
