An architect, he specialized in ecclesiastical work and focused on the Main Line area of Lower Merion Township in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

He served for the duration of World War II as a U.S. Army Combat Engineer, enlisting in 05 Jun 1942 at Fort Belvoir, Virginia and not separating until 28 Dec 1945, with the rank of Major.

The husband of Virginia Tiffany Bowers Downes (1900-1996), they married at Philadelphia in 1923 and had a daughter, Joan, and a son, Roland T. Addis, Jr.
