Prof. P. Jean desGarennes died this morning. Friday. November 6, 1943,
at his home, 408 East Main street, this city, in his 99th year. He was
for a number of years Professor of Languages at United States Naval
Academy, Annapolis.
He was a son of Honore Poulain and Marie Goujon, Ecouflant, France.
and his wife was the late Euginia C. desGarennes.
Surviving are two sons, Henri P. des Garennes, this city, Louis P. desGarennes,
Philadelphia, and one daughter, Sister Benedetta, S.S.N.H..
missioned in Notre Dame, Puerto Rico; twelve grandchildren and fifteen
great-grandchildren.
Solemn mass of requiem will be held on Monday at 10 A. M. at St.
John's Catholic Church and interment will be made in the Cathedral Cemetery.

Prof, des Garennes was a native of France, coming to the United States
in 1895. For twenty-eight years he taught languages at the U. S. Naval
Academy, Annapolis, He had also taught at the Chinese Legation in
Washington and in District Jesuit and public schools.
For his services as a Papal Zouave he was awarded two medals, one from
Pope Pius IX. the other by Pope Leo XIII. He served In the Papal Zouaves
from 1868 to 1870 and saw the fall of Rome in 1870. He was slightly
wounded at that time. He lived in the reign of seven popes. After the
fall of Rome he served in the Franco-Prussian War. He ended his military
career with the grade of lieutenant.
