Born in Duck Creek Hundred, near Smyrna, Kent County, Delaware; named in honor of Governor William Temple of Delaware. As a young man, William followed in his father's steps in the butcher's trade.
Enlisted at Wilmington, DE on December 21, 1866 in the Union army at age of 21. After serving with Union forces in the Civil War, William was transferred in February 1867 as a soldier of a volunteer infantry to Fort Sedgwick, Colorado, assisting troops there during the 'Indian Wars'. From Fort Sedgwick, he was transferred to a post at the Omaha Barracks, Omaha, Nebraska in 1870 and by 1880 was posted at Fort Robinson, Nebraska. While in the service, William often used the alias name (a common practice in the Civil War): William T. Hendrickson.
He finally settled in Glenrock, Converse County, Wyoming working as a ranch hand and handyman on the extensive V R Ranch.
