Martha A. Abernathy, 81, of Port Charlotte, FL, passed away Monday, Dec. 5. 2011.

She was born Jan. 16, 1930 in Waco, Texas.

Martha grew up in Washington, DC. She had many careers that helped her grow in many ways. She was a kindergarten teacher, a police dispatcher, a legal assistant, a librarian, a realtor and was with Naval Intelligence for the Department of Defense. Martha was a world traveler for many years; she always said "her eyes never got tired of looking." She was previously from Ohio, Missouri and was a longtime resident of Washington, DC.

Martha is greatly missed by her loving family, including her daughters, Stephanie (Rod) Coates of Westerville, Ohio; Cassandra (Don) Calbreath of Spokane, Wash.; Susan (Wayne) Owens of Lebanon, MO; and Charlotte (Dave) Nichols of Beltsville, MD; son, Robert "Mark" (Salli Kenrick) Abernathy of El Jobean, FL; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Robert; brother, Erwin; sister, Hesper; and half-brother, Donald.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Arrangements are by National Cremation Society of Port Charlotte.
