William W. Akin, Jr., 91, of Washington Twp., NJ, passed away on Tuesday, December 20, 2011, in Vitas Hospice, Stratford. Born in Clementon, he was a long time resident of Washington Twp. and graduated from Pitman High School in the Class of 1938, where he served as both Vice President and President of his class. After high school, he worked in the aircraft factory at Philadelphia Navy Yard making PVY's before the war. He served with the Army 102nd Division, 406th Infantry Regiment Anti-Tank Company. They landed in France at Cherbourge and went on through Belgium, Holland and Germany from 1942 to 1945. After the war, he worked with his father as a masonary contractor, eventually taking over the business and retiring after 40 years in 1982. Bill was an avid golfer, a former "U.S. closed champion." He was a 50 year member of Pitman American Legion Post #49 and enjoyed camping, traveling, and especially his family. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Elaine (nee Harvey); 2 sons, Norman and Douglas (Cindy); and 3 grandchildren, Randy, Douglas, and Karly. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 27, 2011, at 11:00 AM in MATHIS FUNERAL HOME, 43 N. Delsea Drive, Glassboro, NJ, where friends may call after 10:00 AM. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Washington Twp.
