Cleo Katherine Armstrong - Life Legacy
Cleo Katherine Armstrong was born January 19, 1916 in Weatherford, OK and departed this life on Monday, July 6, 2015 at her home in Alex of 65 years surrounded by her loved ones.
She was the daughter of Ida Mae Goins King Holder and Willie Jess King, and the step-daughter of Roy Love Holder. She and James Everett (J.E.) Armstrong were married on August 15, 1931 in the Grady County Courthouse by Judge Grigsby and were together for 64 ½ years until the Lord called Everett home.
Mrs. Armstrong was a member of the Alex United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher in the 1950’s.
Cleo’s unbelievable accounts of her life were always captivating and would bring everyone in a room to complete silence and awe. A few of her experiences included living in a half dugout, going through the Dust Bowl, surviving the Great Depression, getting the first television in the area and having neighbors from all around come over for watch parties, plus her and Everett buying their first car with a family member as a timeshare.
Cleo was never afraid of hard work or driving the farm truck without a license (even if she did lose a person off the tailgate every now and then). If there was any job that needed to be done, she never failed to do it. She drove a team of mules behind a plow, raised and dressed livestock, fed the broomcorn Johnnies, picked cotton while tending to her infant son in a Moses basket, and washed laundry in a rub board until finally getting a ringer washer.
Her hobbies included gardening, cooking, canning, crocheting, quilting, sewing and spending time with her family and friends. Cleo was “Granny” to EVERYONE who walked through her door. She loved a good joke and never met a stranger.
Mrs. Armstrong was preceded in death by her mother, father and step-father; her husband, J.E. Armstrong; one son, James Kent Armstrong; one son-in-law, Larry Edward Cecil; one daughter-in-law, Edna Mae Armstrong; two brothers, Roy Allen Holder and Forest Ace Holder; and three sisters, Opal Shillings, Laura Jo Roberson and Fern Harris.
Survivors include one son, Jesse Dean Armstrong of Lawton; two daughters, Flona Faye Armstrong and Carol Ann Cecil, both of Alex; one daughter-in-law, Cathy Marie Armstrong of Alex; two sisters, Ila Faye Gaye and Bobbie Lou Drummond, both of Alex; seven grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; and enumerable close family friends.
