Dudley Phillip "Big Daddy" Jones Sr was born on May 27, 1928 in Nashville, Tennessee, the son of Tom Jones and Effie ( -- ) Jones.

He attended Hume Fogg High School where he excelled in all three major sports. After high school, he joined the Marine reserves, basically to play baseball, but in 1950 military choice put Dudley in the middle of the Korean Conflict. Specifically, he was involved in one of the worst battles of that conflict, The Chosin Reservoir, where he survived the coldest winter in 100 years in Korea and where 8,000 US Marines were surrounded by 120,000 Chinese troops: Only 2,000 US soldiers escaped with their lives and were called the "Chosin Few."

Dudley was married in 1950 to Thelma Mae Johnson (1932–2019), who was also a Nashville native. In 1970 he and his wife bought the Dairy King on Thompson Lane at Mill Creek and built the business into one of Nashville's most famous restaurants, a restaurant that was still operated by the family when Dudley died.

A deacon of Vultree Church of Christ and still a resident of Nashville, Dudley was 87 years old when he passed away on July 3, 2015.

Preceded in death by his parents and by his five brothers, he was survived by his wife, three married sons, twelve grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and a sister.

Funeral Services were held at Woodbine Funeral Home, and burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery with Military Honors.
