Gemma was born on 8 March 1919 in Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri to Lewis and Carrie McCrea, and soon moved to Akron, Ohio. After graduating from Ellet High School, she worked for two years as a 'Rosie the Riveter' at Goodyear Aircraft during World War II. She graduated from Actual Business College and worked at Bankers Guarantee Title and Trust until her marriage to Virgil West and the couple opened their own real estate company. After Virgil's death in 1969, she moved to Dunedin, Florida, and worked as a travel counselor at the Saint Petersburg Motor Club's Clearwater Branch for 13 years. Gemma was a member of the Kirk of Dunedin in Florida.
Gemma was preceded in death by husbands Virgil West, Peter Lucchelli, and Leonard Payne. She was also preceded in death by her brother Jack McCrea and his wife Van Ellen.
