Mr. Barber, 62, of 208 E. First St., a heavy equipment mechanic, died Tuesday (June 2, 1992) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester of congestive heart failure after a long illness.
Born March 26, 1930, in Preston Township, Fillmore County, he grew up on the family farm there and attended Preston-area rural schools. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War. On July 16, 1961, he married Georgia King in Spring Valley and they lived in Spring Valley and Rochester before moving to Stewartville in 1964. Mr. Barber had been a heavy equipment mechanic for several area contracting companies. His wife is a longtime employee of the Fish House and High Forest Truck Stop restaurants. Mr. Barber was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Jean B. Barber of Stewartville; a son, Charles J. of Weinbach, Germany; one grandchild; and six sisters, Bernice Smith of Harmony, Mary Waller, Esther (Mrs. Leland) Matson and Clara Knutson, all of Preston, Juliette (Mrs. Byron) Egge of Lanesboro and Nina (Mrs. John) McDonald of Whalan. Three sisters preceded him in death.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, and Saturday until 11 a.m. at Griffin Funeral Home here and an hour before the service at the church.
