Gaynell “Granny” Mattes, age 78 of Bishop, VA passed away Friday, June 26, 2015 at her home. Born October 29, 1936 in Dickenson County, VA, she was a daughter of the late Clayton Gray Hicks and Ethel Minnie Bailey Hicks. She enjoyed church and was a member of Pure In Heart Ministries at Lake Witten in North Tazewell, VA. Mrs. Mattes was a mother like figure of the church. She enjoyed playing her base guitar, horse shoes, and loved everyone. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Clayton Hicks, Jr.; one sister, Georgia Perkins; three sons, Russell Bolen, Ricky Bolen, and Gregory Bolen.
She is survived by her husband, Charles W. Mattes; one son, Steven Bolen and companion, Tonia Lineberger of Mt. Holley, NC; five daughters, Mary Day and husband, Eddie and Karen Hill and husband, Glen all of Lashmeet, WV, Ethel Wilburn and husband, Randy of North Tazewell, VA, Shirley Bowman and husband, William of North Tazewell, VA; and Teresa Bowman and husband, Randall of Boissevain, VA; two grandchildren who she raised as her own, Maria Tabor and husband, Danny of Bristol, TN and Jennifer Price and husband, Clarence of Auburn, IN; four step children, Carl Mattes, Wesley Mattes, Melissa McGilvery, and John Mattes; three sisters, Goldie Crawford of St. Paul, VA; Gracie Hicks and Gladys Hicks both of Wytheville, VA; fourteen grandchildren; twenty two great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Tuesday, June 30, 2015 at Pure in Heart Ministries Church at Lake Witten in North Tazewell, VA with Pastor J.R. Elswick officiating. Burial will follow at Hartwell Cemetery in Hartwell, WV.
The family will receive friends at the church after 6 PM Monday, June 29, 2015.
