Wilbert Lewis was always thinking up ways to do things better, either at his Columbia Funeral Home, or out in the community.

"He was a very exciting person, very impetuous," said his friend of 52 years, Art Dorvetto.

Mr. Lewis, a former Washington State Athletic Commissioner and active in the campaigns of former Gov. Albert Rosellini, couldn't take "no" for an answer and wouldn't give it when anyone else made a request of him, the former governor said.

Mr. Lewis died of a stroke Monday, April 15. He was 81.

The Seattle native got into the funeral business in an apprenticeship opening at Columbia Funeral Home in the early 1930s. He earned a funeral-director's license in 1935, became a partner, and bought the home in 1946 when the owner died. He retired in 1988.

During his tenure, Mr. Lewis was president of state and county funeral-directors associations.

Survivors include his sons Paul Lewis of Seattle and Dano Lewis of Issaquah; and his daughters Charlene Adamsen, Enumclaw, Carole Roberts, Renton, Jackie Terry, Bainbridge, and Gayle Roe, Ocean Shores. His wife, Illa Lewis, died in 1991.

Services are 11 a.m. tomorrow April 18, 1996, at the Columbia Funeral Home, 4567 Rainier Ave. S. Remembrances: Lions Insight Center, 3710 S. Ferdinand St., Seattle, WA, 98118.
