Annegien (Jacobsdatter) Tornga was born in Hoogkerk, Groningen, Netherlands.

In America she went by the first name Annechien.

Her father Jacob passed away on January 1, 1853, in Groningen, Netherlands from influenza. Her mother Aaltje passed away on January 30, 1853, also from influenza.

They left behind 6 children, the oldest daughter was Annechien (or Annegien) she was only 15 years old, and her youngest sibling was Siebrand who was only 2 years old. Annechien did what she could to raise her brothers and sisters and keep them together in the home after her parents' death. The children did what they could to survive. At night, they would go out into the farmers' fields after they harvested cabbage and would dig up the roots to eat. They were able to live together for a while, but later on the children were sent to different relatives to care for them.

Pieter Smit and Annechien Tornga were married on May 27, 1864 in Adorp, Groningen, Netherlands.

Together they had two children, Anna Smit born March 19, 1865 and Hindrik Pieter Smit born on February 15, 1874 both were born in Westeremden, Stedum, Groningen, Netherlands.

They also had another daughter - Aaltje born on Febr. 3, 1878 in Toornwerd, Municipality Middelstum.

Pieter and Annechien had four children that immigrated with them to Chicago, via Castle Garden (NYC), in 1888 —Anna (23 yrs), Janna (20), Hindrik (14), and Altje (9).

Janna Smit is my great-grandmother, and she married Kornelis Aggen in Chicago, 1889. They moved to Ustick township in Whiteside County, IL. Had seven children survive to adulthood, including my grandmother, Alice Aggen Wiersema, 1900-1991. Janna Smit Aggen, 1867-1941, is buried in Morrison, IL, Find-a-Grave ID 91464217.
