Mildred Ethel Carter Waldron Fortney died on February 20, 2015. She lived 101 wonderful years and is survived by her 3 daughters, 8 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren. The world was a better place with her in it. Mildred was born on May 28, 1913. Her father, George Mason Carter, managed the Dickerson and Borrell ranches in Ventura County before farming his own ranch in Moorpark. She remembered driving into town pulled by the family horse, Ginger, and herding cattle along the beach to Santa Barbara. Her mother, Ethel Carter, was postmistress of Ventura and an apartment owner. Mildred graduated in 1929 from Moorpark High School with her older brother, George Carter. She then worked as a nanny and paid her way through Santa Barbara State College earning a degree in education. She taught elementary school in El Rio, Port Hueneme, and Tivy. On September 21,1946, Mildred married Ross Earle Fortney in San Luis Obispo. They were happily married until his death in 1979.Mildred's passion was nurturing, whether a child, animal or plant, the object of her attention received loving care. She embraced nature and would rather spend her time outside than inside. Mildred was a lifelong Girl Scout and Girl Scout Leader. She lived the motto, "Leave the world better than you found it."
