Derrel Lee Durst, 69, passed away March 28, 1994 at the Baum Harmon hospital in Primghar. Derrel was born on May 17, 1924 near Gaza, Iowa. He was the third child of Early Lee Durst and Elsie Clara Ella Wall.

He attended school at Gaza and graduated from the Gaza high school in 1942. He was baptized in the Christian faith in 1944 at the Grace Methodist Church in Paullina and served the Lord has a trustee there. He was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Paullina.

On Dec. 26, 1944 Derrel married Ruth Bernice Clark of Kanawha, Iowa. They were married at the United Presbyterian Church in Clarion, Iowa.

Derrel and Ruth farmed in the Gaza area for several years. Then they moved to their present home two miles southeast of Paullina where he continued to farm.

Derrel had a love and respect for the land, in 1992 he received Iowa Master corn growers award. Derrel served for several years as a director and president of the board of directors for the producers cooperative of Gaza. His life centered around his family.

He was a kind and loving husband, father and grandfather who was always fun to be around.

Derrel was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Densel and Donnell.

Surviving him are his wife Ruth of Paullina; three children, Randy of Paullina, Ronnie and his wife Diana of Reedsville, Wisconsin and Lynette and her husband Roger Meis of Paullina; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Irene and her husband Harold Klink of Primghar; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Durst of Spirit Lake and Beverly Durst of Gaza; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 31 and 10:30 AM at the First Presbyterian Church in Paullina with the Rev. Bruce Kuiper officiating. Interment will follow at the Prairie View cemetery near Paullina. Visitation will be after 3 PM Wednesday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 PM at the Gaudian Eldridge Funeral home of Paullina.
