He was born in Tipton County, TN, March 10th, 1918, son of the late James Harvey Boyce, Sr. and Monica (Nan) Plaxco. He piloted 31 missions over Europe during World War II as a Major in the Army Air Force. Returning to Erskine College and Theological Seminary he received his B.A. and Master of Divinity degrees. Rev. Boyce served as a minister of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in New Sterling, NC, Rosemark, TN, Doraville, GA, Craig Avenue in Charlotte, NC, Sharon, SC, and served as Minister of Visitation at Trinity Presbyterian Church USA in Charlotte prior to retirement. Hundreds of people will recall his sermons with gratitude and remember him as a caring and faithful pastor. Rev. Boyce was a community leader and served as Moderator of First Presbytery of the A.R.P. denomination.
He is survived by his faithful and loving wife of 61 years, Margaret S. Boyce; sons, James N. Boyce of Matthews, John L. Boyce of Columbia, SC; daughters, Trudy N. Boyce, Ph.D. of Atlanta, Rev. Bonnie S. Boyce of Rockford, IL, and Elizabeth A. (Sann) Boyce of Spartanburg, SC; as well as seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
There will be a celebration of his life at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 24th, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 3115 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC. The Rev. Drs. Barry Eller and Colburn Colwell will officiate. The family will receive friends from 9:30-10:50 a.m. prior to the service in the church parlor.
