Seymour J. Pierce - Grand Gorge, Jan. 3 - Funeral rites for Seymour J. Pierce, a descendant of one of the Pilgrims who landed in this country in 1620, will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday from his home here. Rev. William Comstock of Windham and Rev. G. G. Hawley of this place will officiate. Burial will be made in the family plot at Hobart.

Mr. Pierce, who was 83 years old, succumbed at his home at 5:30 Saturday afternoon, after being seriously ill 10 weeks with pneumonia and complications.

He was born Oct. 12, 1855, at Blenheim Hill, his parents being Electus and Clarissa (Wood) Pierce, and he was married at Hobart Sept. 14, 1887, to Miss Ida M. Tennant.

After living in Gilboa and Jefferson, he moved to Grand Gorge in 1920. He had been a member of the Jefferson Methodist Church since he was 17. For 12 years Mr. Pierce was a merchant and postmaster in South Jefferson, and for over 20 years was engaged in the telephone business, being promoter, manager, and President of the Pierce and Peaslee Rural Telephone Company at Gilboa. Mr. and Mrs. Pierce's property was taken over by the city of New York when the Gilboa Resevoir was built.

Among the many interesting facts which the deceased had collected on the Pierce family, was data showing that a relative, Michael Pierce, had been prominent among the Pilgrim Fathers.

Surviving members of the family are: Mrs. Pierce; five sisters, Mrs. George Franklin and Mrs. S. R. Walker of Johnson City, Mrs. Marvin Spencer of Jefferson, Mrs. Charles Stewart of Blenheim, and Mrs. C. D. Jump of Hensonville; and five brothers, E. K. Pierce of Stamford, Arthur Pierce of South Gilboa, B. E. Pierce of Cooperstown, Emery Pierce of Jefferson and Charles Pierce of Tannersville.
