Ruth Evelyn (nee Van Horn) Knudsen was born November 23, 1919 to Frank and Frances Van Horn in Chicago, IL. She graduated from Austin High School in 1937 and met her husband Richard L. Knudsen at a night school dance in 1938. During the war, while her husband was in California with the Navy, Ruth worked as a stenographer for Revere Copper and Brass in Chicago (which had been switched over to making ordinances). When the Navy transferred Rich to Pennsylvania, Ruth joined him, and the lived there for the duration of the war. After Discharge from the Navy (1945-46), the moved back to Chicago and Rich started working for General Motors. Working for G.M. took them to Dearborn, MI, then to New Jersey (NYC), and the back to the Detroit area in 1958. They purchased their home in Birmingham, MI in 1958.
Rich worked for G.M. in Flint from 1960 to 1975 when he retired. He then worked for Alexander Dun (a distributer of products to duty free shops) and retired in 1992. This provided the opportunity for Ruth to work as a “mystery shopper” for Alexander Dun for 13 years, which she enjoyed very much.
Rich Knudsen was called to his heavenly home on September 16, 1996.
Ruth loved music and singing. She joined the North Austin Evangelical Lutheran Church junior choir at age 8 (1927) and participated in the choirs there until she was married in 1944. She sang her first solo “In the Garden” at age 8. Ruth was active in Lutheran churches and choirs wherever they lived. In 1958 they joined the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, Birmingham, MI where she was a member of the choir until 2011. Ruth also sang with other choral groups and was a member of the Hammond Organ Club in the 1960’s. As an active member of Redeemer, she participated in the annual Rummage Sale for 22 years.
Ruth loved gardening and travel. Ruth and Rich were members of the Nomads travel group for many years. She loved spending time with family and friends. She had several beloved pets over the years, including dogs: Cindy and Susie, and Dolly the cat.
For most of her life, Ruth celebrated her birthday on November 22, because that is when her mother said she was born. Around her 90th birthday, the government told her the date of birth was November 23. So, she graciously agreed to change the day to keep the government paperwork happy.

Ruth is pre-deceased by her husband Rich, and her sisters: Helen Wegner and Elaine Oftedahl. She is survived by her nieces and nephews: Arlene (Bill) Eckert, Richard Wegner, Laura Oftedahl, and Glen Oftedahl; great-nieces and nephews, and her beloved cat Dolly.

Ruth Knudsen passed away peacefully at her home on December 31, 2014. She was a loving aunt, neighbor, and friend who blessed all our lives.

Graveside Services with interment of ashes will be held 11AM Friday July 3, 2015 at Hillside Cemetery, Antioch, IL. Rev. Ellen Arthur officiating.
