Rev. Brisco James "B. J." Jackson, 83, of Crossett died Friday, May 6, 2006, at the Ashley County Medical Center. Born in Shelton, LA to James and Mittie Jackson and raised in Oak Ridge, LA, by his grandmother, Maggie Lewis, he moved to Crossett in 1943, where he was employed by Crossett Lumber Co. He joined New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, where he served on the usher and deacon boards. He became a minister in 1949 and served as pastor at Ivory Chapel Baptist Church in Bastrop, LA, Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Monroe, LA, Rose Hill Baptist Church in Dermott and Holly Springs Baptist Church in Pine Hill. He became pastor of New Bethel in 1950 and became full-time pastor in 1966. He returned to high school at the age of 31 and graduated from T. W. Daniel in 1959. He was also a graduate of United Theological Seminary in Monroe.


In addition to serving as pastor of New Bethel, he was moderator of the Southeast District Baptist Association for 29 years and second vice president of the Regular Arkansas Baptist Association and instructor of the ministers' seminar in the association for over 20 years. He was president of the Williams Daycare Center board of directors, a 32nd degree Mason, member of Exodus Lodge 403 of Crossett, Scottish Rites Angerona Lodge 78 in Pine Bluff and a member of Eastern Star of Silver Star Lodge 306 in Crossett.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Sallie Lee Jackson; three daughters, Hazel Hill of Monroe, Betty Levy of Kansas City, KS, and Bobbie Hendrix and husband John of St. Louis, MO; one son, Charles Jackson and wife Mary of Oakland, CA; one sister, Leola Coleman of Flagstaff, AZ; 15 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Dorothy Miller; and one brother, Perry Williams.

Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, May 12, at 11 a.m. at the Crossett Auditorium with Revs. Larry Alexander, Tony Jones, Evandrew Washington and Murlee Carter officiating. Burial will follow at Westview Cemetery under the direction of Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg. Pallbearers are to be Thomas Lowe, James Phifer, Ricky Sims, Albert Goodwin, James Dawkins and Earl Hardaway.

Visitation will be held Thursday, May 11, from 4-7 p.m. at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 309 Georgia St., Crossett.
