Death of Mr. Sherlock. – Mr. Samuel Sherlock, an old and highly esteemed citizen, died at his residence on Fourth street, between Stark and Oak, Sunday morning. His death is directly attributable to internal injuries received by a horse falling on him over a week ago. The best and most experienced medical skill in the city was employed, but his injuries were of a character that baffled every effort. Deceased was aged 56 years at the time of his death. For many years he has been engaged in carrying on an extensive saddlery and harness making establishment in this city. Mr. Sherlock was an honorable, upright gentleman in his social and business relations a good citizen and kind husband and father. He leaves a wife and two accomplished daughters to mourn his departure. The funeral will take place this afternoon at 4 o’clock, from Trinity church.

Samuel F. Sherlock was born in Ireland, to the parents of John and Dorothea Sherlock. Samuel married Miss Rosetta D. (Wales) b. 1846 in Wales of Irish descent. His young wife left the luxury of her beautiful English home and traveled abroad from England to New York in 1851, residing there for six years. They traveled by way of the Isthmus with their two young children, (one of the two children was Sarah Francis Sherlock) sailing by ocean to Portland, Oregon in 1857. The couple had two sons and four daughters. William Sherlock a native of Ireland arrived in 1850 with his family crossing the plains to Oregon. William together with Chas. P. Bacon established the “Blackhawk” livery stable in Portland in the midst of early pioneers purchased property in Portland, Oregon. The Sherlock family platted the Sherlock addition (before 1852) owning extensive property and beautiful homes in Oregon, and merchant shops. Samuel Sherlock along with his brother William founded the first saddler’s shop, S. Sherlock & Co. 52 Front Street in Portland, Oregon. Mr. Sherlock’s faith was within the Episcopal Church (M. E.), a leader in the Masonic fraternity. Sadly he passed away in 1876 from injuries resulting from being thrown from a horse. George Lawrence was a Portland pioneer since 1874 and former partner and brother in law of Samuel Sherlock. Mr. George Lawrence and Rosetta Sherlock later married on August 13, 1861, and had six children of their own. The Samuel Sherlock Company, at present is the George Lawrence Wholesale Saddle Co.
