The family always thought William was born in Belfast, Antrim, Ireland, but no birth record for him there has been found, nor has any immigration record been discovered.

Note: All the Census and his death certificate report that he was born in Philadelphia.

On the US 1830 Census in North Ward, Philadelphia, there are four household members enumerated: they would be Samuel (father), Elizabeth (mother), James (brother), and William. Other Census give various birth years: 1830, 1831, 1832 and 1833. Because of the data on the 1830 Census, it was decided to use the 1830 birth year.
