Ralph Waldo Coston was a Civil Aeronautics Authority flying instructor. His training monoplane crashed into the dry river bottom of Mission Valley. The monoplane snared on a 12,000-volt high-tension wire 50 feet above the ground. The student flyer was thrown clear and walked away from the plane seeking help in a gravel company office a quarter of a mile away. Mr. Coston was formerly a flyer in Waco. He had worked for several aviation companies on the East and West Coast. He was employed with Ryan Aeronautics Company in Los Angeles and his duties as a CAA instructor began a week before the accident. Survivors include his parents; one brother; two sisters.
